How to Choose PAM for Different Sludge Dewatering Equipment?

Polyacrylamide (PAM) is widely used in sludge dewatering to improve flocculation and solid-liquid separation. However, different dewatering equipment requires different floc characteristics and PAM performance.

1. Belt Filter Press

A belt filter press generally requires PAM with good flocculation and fast dewatering performance. The right PAM can form stable flocs, improve water release through the filter belt, and reduce cake moisture.

2. Centrifuge

Centrifugal dewatering requires strong and stable flocs that can withstand high-speed rotation. Proper PAM selection helps prevent floc breakage and improves separation efficiency.

3. Filter Press

A filter press requires dense and strong flocs for effective filtration. Suitable PAM can improve filtration speed, reduce filter cloth blinding, and produce a drier filter cake.

4. Screw Press

For screw presses, PAM helps form stable sludge flocs and promotes water release during continuous pressing, improving overall dewatering performance.

How to Select the Right PAM?

There is no universal PAM for every sludge and dewatering system. Selection should consider:

  • Sludge characteristics
  • Dewatering equipment
  • PAM ionic degree
  • Molecular weight
  • Dosage
  • Mixing conditions

Laboratory jar testing or on-site trials are recommended to determine the most suitable PAM grade and dosage.

The right PAM selection can improve sludge dewatering efficiency while helping reduce chemical consumption and treatment costs.
